The Social Media Marketing Institute (SMMI) has launched a new course for professionals aiming to use social media to generate business and build online communities: Certified Social Media Marketer (CSM). The course runs for two days and is available across the US.

The CSM course claims to offer “a comprehensive overview of social media, covering theory, strategy and successful execution.” In a statement from the company, Bill Lublin, SMMI CEO, summed up the benefits of the course:

“The growth of Social Media is undeniable, and the fact that 12.4 million new users were age 35-49 suggests that this platform isn’t just for the young - everyone can benefit from it. We look forward to nurturing the growth of Social Media as the most effective tool for networking, marketing, and branding, and we believe that anyone who can write a coherent email or letter can find success in the social media space.”

Founded in 2008, SMMI provides education on social media as well as marketing and communications advice. The organisation also emphasises the important of “You Engaging Others”, or YEO, when using social media. In a recent blog post, SMMI founding partner Jeff Turner outlined his experiment to prove the ineffectiveness of gaining Twitter followers purely for the sake of numbers, arguing: “Getting followers is easy. Building a community is hard.”
