Will Google’s +1 Button Catch On?

Google’s answer to Facebook’s “like” button is now available to website owners, but will it catch on?

When Google launched its +1 button back in April, the search engine giant described it as shorthand for “you should check this out”. Now, the button can be added to any website, allowing people to hit “+1″ and recommend web pages to friends and contacts.

At least one real estate website - Australian free-to-list property portal thehomepage.com.au - has taken the plunge and added the +1 button to its listings. As you can see below, it appears alongside the other social recommendation tools we’ve become used to seeing, such as Facebook and Twitter:

“As far as we know we are the first real estate site in Australia to add this new Google feature,” says the homepage.com.au. “Individuals looking at property are increasingly sharing their recommendations on Facebook and Twitter and Google’s +1 button just makes sense.”

While it was quick to add the button, thehomepage.com.au admits it is still too early to tell whether people will start to use it. “We’re looking forward to seeing great things from Google +1 but only time will tell if the new service will compete with the Facebook Like or Twitter,” the website says.

Will you be adding Google’s +1 button to your own real estate website, or will you hold off to see whether it’s here to stay? Let us know in the survey below:
