Real Estate Goes Green for Earth Day

US online real estate marketing company HomeGain Inc. has announced its “Green Real Estate Campaign” in the lead up to Earth Day 2009.

Through a partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation, HomeGain is pledging to pay for up to 1000 trees to be planted in US national forests. The campaign will also provide reusable shopping bags for HomeGain’s agent members as well as audio interviews and webinars with what the company calls “green HomeGain members”.

In a statement from the company, Louis Cammarosano, HomeGain General Manager, pointed out the growing importance of having a green focus in real estate: “Energy efficient homes are not only good for the environment, they are also in demand by home buyers.”

HomeGain is not the only real estate organisation looking at environmental issues this week. The Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) International has also released a list of green tips and strategies for agents, noting that the office building industry accounts for nearly 20 percent of US greenhouse gas emissions. “These 100 straight-forward strategies for going green are critical tools any property professional can put to work today,” said Richard D. Purtell, BOMA International Chair and Chief Elected Officer.

While Earth Day 2009 is bringing green real estate into sharper focus, there are a number of property websites and organisations that prioritise environmental issues all year round. One example is listedgreen.com, a worldwide Multiple Listing Service for environmentally sustainable homes and housing developments. greenhomesforsale.com is another property portal that only displays listings for properties that meet certain environmentally friendly criteria.

Other opportunities for real estate professionals and home builders include the green building course series offered by US based organisation Green Real Estate Education. Finally, real estate professionals who can make it to Toronto on April 30th 2009 can attend the Green Real Estate conference, which will look at the continued popularity of green buildings despite the global economic downturn.
