Since hiring advertising consultants AIM Group to conduct a study on crimes linked to Craigslist, competitor classifieds website Oodle has ignited what one blogger has described as “a war of words between CEOs.”
Alongside this debate over whether Craigslist is a safe online marketplace, a number of real estate industry commentators have weighed in with their take on whether real estate agents should be using the website.
“There isn’t anything wrong with Craigslist, but in my opinion there is something wrong with some of the people who are using it to advertise real estate and the people who respond to the ads,” writes inman.com contributor Teresa Boardman, arguing that the number of scams on Craigslist make it difficult for legitimate listings to shine through.
Meanwhile, Canadian real estate website zoocasa.com argues that agents shouldn’t overlook Craigslist as a source of business.
“As the online marketplace is only expanding and will probably be the preferred mode of transaction for the next generation, cutting off an avenue of free marketing/majorly discounted goods is probably not the best option,” zoocasa.com states, but cautions that its best to follow the maxim: “If it sounds too good to be true, it is.”
